"behind"

Yes, mykids are *behind* what typical society sets for standards in some
areas. I'm sure they always have been. But as they get older, it
makes less and less difference. Those guidelines the school tells us
our children should be following really don't matter a hell of a lot,
because they will cover what they want to cover and they will do it
in their own time, in their own way, as it pertains to their real
lives and their real minds and hearts.
